An exclusive typeface for the Yellow Pages directory of British Telecommunications Plc.
Commissioned work for Johnson Banks, London at The Foundry, London.
This sanserif typeface, distinguished by simplicity of design and condensed letterforms, is extremely economic with space*. It is clear and highly readable at a very small size of 5 points due to its very large x-height.
To undergo inktraps by drawing deep cut-ins where vertical and horizontal strokes are joining, sharp horizontals were designed to gain more white space around the joining strokes. This treatment is essential of the design and keeps the letters very open at the same time.
A functional design that embodies a lucky combination of legibility and technical restraints.
* As a side effect the Yellow typeface saved the printers tons of paper.

Yellow wurde im Auftrag für Johnson Banks, London,
im Büro The Foundry, London,
exclusiv für die Yellow Pages der British Telecommunications Plc entworfen.
Yellow wurde als eine klare Serifenlose konzipiert mit schmalen Buchstabenformen und einer sehr hohen Mittellänge der Kleinbuchstaben, um bei einer Schriftgröße von 5 Punkt gut lesbar zu bleiben.
Um tiefe Einstiche, wie bei Schriften aus dem Fotosatz üblich, an den Kreuzungspunkten von Horizontalen und Vertikalen zu vermeiden, wurden scharfe und eher flache Einschnitte an diesen Stellen gezeichnet. Somit konnten dort große Weißräume geschaffen werden, die ein Verflecken verhindern.
Dies führte auch zu sehr offenen Formen; die Einkerbungen wirken der Vertikalität, bedingt durch die schmalen Formen und der hohen Mittellänge, entgegen.
